Hail Damage Roof Inspection: A Field Checklist That Survives the Adjuster
Most hail claims don't die in the carrier's office. They die on the roof, during an inspection that didn't produce the evidence the claim needed. A hail damage roof inspection has one job: build a record so complete that your report and the adjuster's can only reach the same conclusion.

Pin down the storm before you climb
Walking a roof without knowing the storm is guessing. Before the ladder comes off the truck, know three things:
- The date of loss. Which storm are you attributing this damage to? Roofs in hail country take hits across multiple seasons, and the carrier will pick the date that suits them if you don't establish yours.
- The hail size at that address. Not the county maximum from a news report — the estimated size where this roof actually sits.
- The storm's track. Hail strikes cluster on the slopes that faced the storm. If your damage pattern contradicts the storm's path, expect pushback.

Start on the ground: collateral damage first
Soft metals don't lie, and adjusters know it. Before you touch a shingle, walk the property and document the collateral:
- Gutters and downspouts — dents and dings, especially on the storm-facing sides
- Window screens — tears and impact marks
- AC condenser fins — flattened sections
- Mailboxes, light fixtures, garage doors, painted railings, fences
Photograph each one with something in frame for scale. Collateral damage proves hail of damaging size reached this property, and its pattern should agree with the storm's direction. If the shingle "damage" sits on a slope the soft metals say was sheltered, your file has a contradiction in it. Better you find it in the driveway than the adjuster finds it in review.
Chalk your test squares
The test square is the industry standard because it converts "I saw some hits" into a countable, photographable density.
- Mark a 10' x 10' square on each slope with chalk.
- Circle every hail strike inside it — and only hail strikes. A hail bruise is random in placement, roughly round, with granule loss and exposed or fractured mat. Blisters, foot scuffs, and nail pops are not hail; an inspector who circles everything loses credibility on all of it.
- Count the hits per square. Most carriers look for a threshold (commonly eight or more, varying by carrier and region) to justify slope replacement.
- Photograph the full square, then close-ups of representative strikes with the chalk circle and a gauge or tape in frame.
Shoot slope by slope, same order every time
Random camera-roll photos sink claims because nobody can reconstruct what they show. Shoot every inspection in a fixed sequence so the file reads like a document, not a dump:
- The address — house number or street view, first frame.
- Four elevation overviews from the ground.
- Per slope: a wide establishing shot, the test square, then close-ups — labeled by direction (N, NE, E, and so on).
- Accessories: ridge caps, vents, pipe boots, and flashings. Soft aluminum shows strikes clearly even when shingle damage is borderline — often your strongest rooftop evidence.

Tie it all to a date of loss
This is where most inspections fall short. You've proven the roof has hail damage; now prove when. The carrier's favorite outs — "wear and tear," "old damage," "prior storm" — all attack the date, not the damage.
